The Fossil Marine Mammals of the Netherlands

In 2023, the book “The Fossil Marine Mammals of the Netherlands” was published through North Sea Fossils. This book was written by Klaas Post and Noud Peters.

The North Sea has been populated for millions of years by numerous species of baleen whales, toothed whales, seals, and walruses. The search for fossil remains of marine mammals in the subsurface of the Netherlands and the North Sea has yielded a surprising amount of new information in recent years. This information often concerns species already known from elsewhere, but also new species. Some of these have been described and published, while others are still to be published.

In this richly illustrated book, Klaas Post and Noud Peters provide an overview of the current state of affairs. In addition to characterizing the animal groups involved and

their locations in the Netherlands, the fossil material from numerous families is highlighted. Much of this material is held in museums, and some is also in private collections.
